Ben Carlson, Chartered Financial Analyst® and Director of Institutional Asset Management, has spent his career helping institutions invest and manage their portfolios. He has provided both portfolio management and consulting services to a wide range of institutional funds, including endowments, foundations, pension plans and operating funds for various hospitals, insurance companies and charitable organizations. This includes positions with a $2.5 billion investment consulting firm as well as a portfolio management role with a $1.4 billion endowment fund. Ben’s main goal is to provide high quality institutional investment advice to help organizations achieve their desired goals.
Ben’s institutional investment philosophy is based on a straightforward, operationally efficient approach. This process is centered around the importance of long-term performance, but also recognizes the need to manage risk within the context of meeting an organization’s goals, objectives and spending needs. Ben looks to create personalized investment plans that are easy to understand, operationally efficient, low-cost, transparent and liquid.
Ben is the creator of the blog A Wealth of Common Sense and the author of the book A Wealth of Common Sense: Why Simplicity Trumps Complexity in Any Investment Plan (Wiley, 2015). When he’s not working or writing, Ben spends most of his time with his wife and young daughter in their hometown of Grand Rapids, MI.
